Holding on to Creativity in Tough Times
A newsletter about writing, art and living more creatively
The past couple of weeks have been rough politically — and personally for a lot of people I know. I've been staying home more, texting people to ask how they're doing, making sure to call home.
I do, often, look to art for solace. But I also wonder about ways that art can make an impact and help communities in need.
Here are a few things that have been on my mind in terms of finding ways to support others:
Redeemed
I'm participating in a program by Natashia Deon called Redeemed, which matches writers to people looking to clear their records. Writers help with their affidavits, an extremely important part of the process — and a difficult one when literacy levels are low. You can donate and find out more here.
Writers for Migrant Justice
This event was organized in support of Immigrant Families Together. Hosted by Susan Briante and Raquel Gutiérrez, it's happening Wednesday, September 4th at @exoroastco EXO Coffeeshop at 7pm. Readers include: Farid Matuk, Laura Espósto, Teré Fowler-Chapman, TC Tolbert, Bianca Linares, and more. They're encouraging other writers to organize readings in their own cities. More info here.
Got a Girl Crush Mag
I always enjoy reading about female founders, writers, creatives, etc. Got a Girl Crush is donating all magazine sale proceeds to Border Kindness — which provides provides migrants, refugees and the displaced with comprehensive services that include food, shelter, clothing and medical.
I'd love to hear about any others that you know about.
xoxo,
Your favorite small but feisty writer
