7 Podcasts for Creative People
A newsletter about writing, art and living more creatively
Hi friends,
I've been listening way more podcasts during the past year and a half — both to get outside and walk, and to not look at my phone for a bit. So I thought I'd share some of my faves here.
🌈 Mind Your Practice
Arts consultants Beth Pickens has worked with countless artists on everything from funding to self-confidence. She's the author of Your Art Will Save Your Life and Make Your Art No Matter What. This podcast has short episodes that are super helpful even though they're succinct (I've listened to some long episodes of shows where I don't get much value!). She also gives you an assignment/homework at the end if you're someone who's into that!
🎶 Song Exploder
I admit it took me a minute to really dive into this podcast but I love it. It's great for anyone who likes learning about the nuts and bolts of how someone made something — in this case, songs. You'll leave with a new appreciation for the song and also some insights into just how differently each artist works.
🎨 Design Matters
Debbie Millman has been interviewing interesting people for more than a decade (!) and they range from visual artists to writers to actors. She always does a ton of research before the interview so get ready for a deep dive every time you put it on. (These long episodes are great for long walks!)
💸 Girl Behind the Hustle
I'm biased because I was interviewed for this podcast but I also genuinely enjoyed the episodes beforehand and after! This is more for the biz side of my brain, and it's fascinating to hear from people in marketing, beauty and more.
🖼 The Lisa Congdon Sessions
Illustrator and artist Lisa Congdon is super candid and transparent in this podcast about her journey to getting where she is today. It's not just about career tips, but also general mental health and creativity insights.
📚 The Manuscript Academy
This one is particularly aimed at writers and covers everything from the writing process to the nitty gritty of publishing (agents, editor, manuscripts), etc. There are some great interviews with people in the publishing industry that are super helpful.
👀 Last Seen
Okay, this one is also just plain fun. It's all about the Isabella Stewart Gardner heist (which was also featured in a Netflix documentary recently). It's a fascinating story and I also just loved hearing how they organized all their research and interviews. Art heists are a thing.
These are just a few suggestions — I know there are tons out there. Hit that REPLY button if you have a recent favorite. And LMK if you'd like any other lists of recommendations!

I wrote about the previously censored Barbara Carrasco mural, soon to be on permanent display.
I got home decor tips based on my astrological sign (hello fellow Sags).
